Links

This page contains all of the links to Geocaching software and useful web sites that can help you cache. I keep a few of my most highly recommended cache links on the sidebar, but this page has more links and more information about them.

Categories are in alphabetical order, as are the links within each category.

Forums
  • Reddit's Geocaching subreddit - Reddit is an immense online community with subcategories on too many topics to list.  The Geocaching subreddit has over 5800 viewers as of January 2013, and it's a great place to both join discussions or share pictures of your adventures.
Mapping Tools
Misc
  • Geocache Rating System Tool - This simple question and answer form will help you create accurate Terrain and Difficulty ratings for your cache.
  • iNeverSolo - If you are planning a long hiking, camping, or caching trip in the woods, this free service can be used to help people find you if things go wrong.
  • State by State land use regulations - Groundspeak has created a list of the land use laws for each state.  Most of these deal with how to place a cache in a state park or forest land.
  • Delaware Valley Historical Interest - I maintain a bookmark list of caches that I have visited on sites with local historical interest.
Maps for your GPS
  • GPS File Depot - Free terrain maps for your Garmin, and much, much more. There are tutorials on how to create your own maps, as well as terrain maps for selected areas.  A terrific resource.
  • Open Street Maps for Garmin - Free routable maps for your Garmin.  This gives you turn by turn driving directions, and then allows you to go "off road" when you get close enough to the cache.  This is an incredible free resource.
Printables
  • Geocaching Brochure - Print a few of these and keep them in your kit.  If you are ever stopped bythe police or questioned by anyone, you can give them this to help explain what you're doing.
  • Log Sheets #1 - Some printable log sheets.
  • Log Sheets #2 - More printable log sheets.
Profile Tools
  • FindStatGen for GSAK - If you use GSAK, this tool will create an awesome custom profile for you, including country, state, and county maps. Tutorial forthcoming.
  • My Geocaching Profile - This site lets you take your list of finds (which you can generate as a Pocket Query) and will generate out a nice custom profile page for you.
Puzzle Cache Resources
  • Base64 Encoder - If you've ever had the need to encode a puzzle cache clue in Base64, look no further.
  • Caesarian Shift Cipher - Very basic cipher, but fun enough to crack.
  • Cipher Tools - A huge list of cipher tools.  Go nuts, but be aware that your ciper clues may drive some cachers insane.
  • GeoChecker - Automate the guessing process.  Put the answer to your puzzle here, and people can submit their guesses until they get it right.
  • How to encode an image to sound - I have never seen a cache clue like this, but I bookmarked this for some reason (hint hint).  Embed an image in the spectrogram of a music file.
  • How to make a Cryptex - How to make a combination lock tube thing from that movie I never saw for about $15 worth of material.
  • Online ROT5, ROT13, ROT18, ROT47 Encoder / Decoder Tool - This is a simple shift cipher, like what's used on the official hint on each Geocaching description page.  Now you can make your own wacky variant.
  • QR Code Generator - QR Codes are becoming ubiquitous (yes, I said "ubiquitous").  This tool will allow you to encode your web site or a short phrase into a printable QR code that anyone with a smart phone can view.
Reference Guides

  • ExpertGPS - Not free - detailed topographical maps for download.

  • Geocaching.com's Official List of Software - This is a pretty comprehensive list of software, right from the folks at Geocaching.com.
  • GeoPT Geocaching Tools - The site is in Portuguese, but the software has an English option. Tool to let you manage your GPS.
  • GPS Resources - Loads of software in a big list. I've only checked out a few of them, so have fun.
  • GSAK - Excellent database tool for downloading and managing cache listings.  Integrates with Geocaching.com, and has tons of macros to increase this tool's capabilities.  Free to try (with a nag screen), but totally worth the $30 to buy. Tutorials coming soon!
  • PQLibre - Free tool to generate GPX files that even works for Basic members.
Trackables
  • Pathtags - While not trackable on the Geocaching site, Pathtags are trackable on the Pathtags site and can be a good bit less expensive than a comparable Geocoin or Travel Bug.
  • TB-Rescue - Lost a Travel Bug?  Post the info to this site and if somebody finds it, they can report it found.  Likewise, if you found an unknown Travel Bug, report it here for its owner to find.
